If I could gain permission, then yes I would certainly try my hand at it. I think I would start around the fireplace area… no real reason. I would also look for any evidence of the foundation and hunt on the “outside” of that. But… I would certainly try to sweep over as much of the area as I possibly could. Probably grid off a square area and just do it.
I would also to find out as much history of the place as possible. Maybe the landowner knows something, and/or checking old maps of the area. Find out what it was that was there, and any stories surrounding it.
There is an almost identical site like this picture not far from me, but I haven’t taken the time to find out who owns the property. Guess I should do that so I can start digging!
Definitely worth checking out. Prepare yourself for a ton of nails. I would check the fireplace and around the foundation like the previous poster suggested. I would also search around an nearby mounds (might be covering an old stump) as well as depressions (perhaps a cellar). If you don’t find coins, might still find some interesting relics.
So have you had a chance to metal detect at this site? If yes, how did it go?
Hey James. Interestingly enough, this site is just a couple of miles from where I grew up. I’ve driven by it a million times as it’s on the way in and out from my parent’s house. The posted “NO TRESPASSING” signs have prevented any detecting. The landowner’s aren’t known for their southern hospitality.
That’s too bad. It looked really promising. Do you have a back detector? May the owner might warm up if you have him along for the hunt. Or perhaps they aren’t even approachable.
Whoops. I meant “back up detector”
James, not sure if it’s do-able. I have a cheap back up BH/Discovery 2000. I know some of the folks *near* this site. Might have to get their assistance in getting in good with the landowners. I’ll keep ya posted.
